Creative workshops using reclaimed materials to educate school students and the wider community about marine litter and the impact on local ecosystems.

“Sydney Harbour is not only an icon of our city, but a vital environment that so many communities are connected to and care deeply about.

"It was incredibly rewarding to work with primary school students from around the harbour, using creative reuse and art to show how everyday materials and actions impact our marine environments, and how art can help young people imagine and communicate bold visions for a more sustainable future."

Sam Daykin, Reverse Garbage Education Program Manager

Purchase of a simulated radio console to train and assess new volunteers in radio operations, improving emergency response capabilities that local and visiting recreational boaters rely upon.

“Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking is consistently one of the busiest units in New South Wales. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our service, and we are continually training both new and existing members to ensure we remain rescue-ready around the clock.

“It is mission-critical that we have fit-for-purpose training equipment, and we are grateful for the financial support from Port Authority NSW that has enabled the delivery of a new radio console simulator.

“Our radio operators are the lifesaving link between land and sea, and this equipment will play a vital role in training our volunteer radio operators, who are often the first voice a boater in distress hears.”

Free youth swimming clinics across the Newcastle region, promoting swimming as a vital life skill while fostering coaching development and community engagement. Fostering inclusion across different backgrounds and abilities.

“Swimming is a vital life skill, particularly for people living and spending time around our ports and waterways. This Port Authority of NSW grant allowed us to deliver free swimming clinics for 108 youths and support the development of eight local coaches - opportunities that simply wouldn’t have been possible without this funding.

“Programs like this create meaningful, lasting outcomes by improving water safety, building confidence and ensuring people of all backgrounds and abilities can access high quality, community focused swimming education in our port communities.”
