From the high seas to the big screen: Port Authority helps beam NSW around the world

From Hollywood blockbusters and international television series to global advertising campaigns and viral online content, Port Authority of NSW is helping showcase New South Wales to audiences around the world.

As the custodian of some of the State’s most iconic waterfront locations and maritime infrastructure, Port Authority facilitated 37 film and photography productions last financial year.

The latest big-ticket item supported by Port Authority, is Netflix’s ‘Extraction’ franchise, with one of the organisation’s marine pilots guiding a 180-metre commercial vessel into Port Kembla harbour to create part of the film’s maritime backdrop.

Additional scenes in the blockbuster, which stars Chris Hemsworth, were also filmed this month at Port Authority’s Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay.

Port Authority of NSW Chief Executive Officer John McKenna said the growing use of its sites by production companies was delivering broader economic benefits for NSW.

"From major feature films and international television dramas to advertising campaigns, filmmakers continue to choose NSW because of its spectacular locations, skilled workforce, government incentives, and world-class infrastructure," Mr McKenna said.

"Port Authority is uniquely positioned to support these productions by providing access to working waterfront locations, operational expertise and maritime infrastructure that help bring stories to life on screen.

"While many people know us for our role supporting commercial shipping, pilotage and cruise operations across NSW, our assets are also creating value beyond maritime, supporting growing industries, generating new opportunities and helping showcase the very best of New South Wales to the world."

Port Authority is preparing to host other major international productions later this year.

Screen NSW’s Executive Director Kylie Munnich said the NSW Government was committed to the state being the leading destination for screen production in Australia.

“Screen production and post-production contributes more than a billion dollars annually to the New South Wales economy, directly supporting thousands of roles for local cast and crew, while also providing significant value for ancillary industries including security, hospitality, transport and logistics,” Ms Munnich said.

“The recent arrival of Extraction 3 marks a major moment for NSW, particularly for our regional areas, with local businesses also set to see the benefits with a production of this scale filming in the area.”
