Port Authority Officer awarded prestigious young achiever award

Port Authority of NSW is abuzz with excitement after Port Officer, Ruby Peterlin took out the Young Achievement Award at last night’s National 2022 Daily Cargo News Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards held in Melbourne.

Port Authority of NSW’s CEO Captain Philip Holliday said as Port Kembla’s first ever Indigenous female port officer, Ruby’s success also highlighted the incredible contributions young women and increased workforce diversity are bringing to the maritime industry.

“Port Authority is extremely proud to have Ruby working with our business and this Award shines a spotlight on her many outstanding achievements to date, along with her enthusiasm and ambition to build her maritime career,” Mr Holliday said.

“As a 19 year-old First Nations woman from Port Kembla in the Illawarra region of NSW, she is an incredible role model for all young women interested in a career in maritime.

“Ruby joined us at Port Authority not long after completing her Year 12 studies, with no experience in the industry, and she has gone from strength-to strength.
“This Award recognised both her talent, hard work and commitment as well as her success.

Ruby has worked consistently to not only complete her Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal), as well as completing MED 3 and very soon will undertake Master 4 and MED 2 in 2023.

Her academic success was also recognised in her being awarded the NSW TAFE Gili Award for the 2022 Supply Chain and eCommerce Student of the Year.
“The Board, executive team and all her work colleagues are delighted that Ruby won this Award. We think she is a terrific part of our team at Port Authority and we see a big future for her in maritime,” Captain Holliday said.

The Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards is an annual national event run by the leading maritime magazine, the DCN (Daily Cargo News).
This year Port Authority sponsored the Diversity and Inclusion Award, won by AMS Group.
