Port Authority Walking on Sunshine as Finalist in 2023 Business Hunter Awards

While Novacastrians have been voting with their feet since the new revitalised Macquarie Pier opened, Port Authority has now received a nod of approval by being named a finalist in the 2023 Business Hunter Awards for the project.

Port Authority of NSW’s CEO Captain Philip Holliday welcomed the announcement, saying he was delighted by the special acknowledgement of Port Authority’s work restoring the walk and bringing to life the many stories linking Macquarie Pier to Newcastle’s unique history.

“Port Authority completed this project as part of our continued focus on improving our environment for the people of Newcastle and the Hunter and we are delighted to see how many people are visiting and using this special walk every day,” Captain Holliday said.

“It shows the power of storytelling and highlights the Hunter’s long and important connection with maritime and the sea.

“The signage and free audio tour are an innovative approach to capturing so much history - from the prehistoric volcanic activity that created Nobbys-Whibaygamba Headland, the significant and ongoing connection of the site to Traditional Owners, through the World Wars, up to today where it still plays an important part actively protecting the maritime industry that supports the region.

“We wanted to create something that resonated with a wide range of listeners from locals to tourists and people of all ages. The immersive storytelling brings people and significant moments in history to life in a way that we hope is memorable and will help carry this history forward for generations to come.

“The project was also honoured this year with a Highly Commended in the National Trust Heritage Awards, but it is a special thrill to be given a nod of approval by being named a finalist in the prestigious Hunter Business Awards in the Excellence in Innovation category.”

The immersive tour was born following Port Authority’s $1.85 million revitalisation of Macquarie Pier.

“Congratulations to all finalists. We are honoured to be in your company and look forward to celebrating everyone’s amazing achievements at the official awards event,” Captain Holliday said.

Award winners will be announced at a gala event hosted by Business Hunter on Friday 25 August.
